{"id":17,"date":"2012-03-08T17:44:33","date_gmt":"2012-03-08T16:44:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.andrewleestrust.org\/blog\/?p=17"},"modified":"2013-10-25T12:44:52","modified_gmt":"2013-10-25T11:44:52","slug":"imagine-a-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.andrewleestrust.org\/blog\/?p=17","title":{"rendered":"Imagine a World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>17:44 on March 8th 2012<\/em><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><em><strong>IMAGINE A WORLD<\/strong><\/em><em>\u00a0when all you know is how to hoe your field, the only way you find<a href=\"http:\/\/worldofdifference.vodafone.co.uk\/blogs\/yvonne-orengo\/files\/2012\/03\/27-04-2010-042.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/worldofdifference.vodafone.co.uk\/blogs\/yvonne-orengo\/files\/2012\/03\/27-04-2010-042-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>\u00a0out anything important is to ask the oldest man in your community for news, and if you want to tell your family that your uncle has died, or your daughter just married, you must walk for more than a week to tell them face to face.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That was the reality I walked into back in 1999 when ALT launched\u00a0<strong>Project Radio<\/strong>\u00a0in southern Madagascar. Our participative radio production over ten years made a real difference to that story. Women told evaluators in 2006 that they no longer had to rely on male elders to tell them what was happening \u2013 they could hear it on the radios we had given them (Solar\/wind up radios).<\/p>\n<p>Villages who listened to our educational radio broadcasts demonstrated changes in their attitudes and behaviours \u2013 for example : using fuel efficient stoves that would save 65% of normal wood demands for cooking the evening meal; taking their children to be vaccinated; growing tomatoes where traditionally they would not; adopting new farming techniques; planting trees; attending literacy programmes;\u00a0 accepting that HIV might be a reality and that sexual attitudes and practices need to change. Listeners also reported they were happy to have regular news, weather warnings and to be able to communicate with each other!<a href=\"http:\/\/andrewleestrust.org\/Reports\/1%20Project%20Radio%20Impact%20Study%20-%20Metcalf,%20Harford%20and%20Myers.pdf\">http:\/\/andrewleestrust.org\/Reports\/1%20Project%20Radio%20Impact%20Study%20-%20Metcalf,%20Harford%20and%20Myers.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/worldofdifference.vodafone.co.uk\/blogs\/yvonne-orengo\/files\/2012\/03\/Practice-Filming-Training-Event-ABB.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/worldofdifference.vodafone.co.uk\/blogs\/yvonne-orengo\/files\/2012\/03\/Practice-Filming-Training-Event-ABB-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"131\" \/><\/a>In 2007, Andrew Lees Trust built on its radio project experiences and \u2013 using\u00a0<strong>oral testimony<\/strong>\u00a0techniques \u2013 began projects to increase the \u2018voice\u2019 of local people so they could better influence development strategies by sharing their knowledge and perspectives with regional and national decision makers.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.andrewleestrust.org\/hepa.htm\">ttp:\/\/www.andrewleestrust.org\/hepa.htm<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>ALT\u2019s new project : Village Voices for Development<\/strong>\u00a0is the next step and will use radio and mobile telephony as the media to facilitate direct debate between villagers and decision makers about local development challenges. The project aims to create a more open society, promote human rights and encourage improved relations between ordinary people and the decision makers who decide their future.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.andrewleestrust.org\/voices.htm\">http:\/\/www.andrewleestrust.org\/voices.htm<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>How will VVD Work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Village Voices for Development (VVD) will build on ALT\u2019s ten years of experience with Project Radio \u2019<a href=\"http:\/\/www.andrewleestrust.org\/radio.htm\">http:\/\/www.andrewleestrust.org\/radio.htm<\/a>\u00a0and benefit from working with existing\u00a0<strong>Radio Listening Groups<\/strong>\u00a0in the Androy region.<\/p>\n<p>The project will enable\u00a0villagers to discuss and record their most challenging development issues, and to pose questions and express their concerns about these to local decision makers who in turn will listen to the recorded points and respond.
