Projet FAKO, Fort Dauphin

The Trust was awarded funds from the DFID SGS to help launch a local waste clearing project, Projet Fako, in association with a Malagasy engineer who had proposed the idea to the Trust last year.

The project spanned a two-month launch program in collaboration with the Commune of Fort Dauphin to support an initiative by the local mayor to create a 'clean up month' for the town.

Projet Fako developed a number of activities aimed to improve awareness and practice in waste management including educational radio broadcasts, a month of participative activities with townspeople and local partners, and a routine of waste collection around targeted areas with particular relevance to the town's health and eco-tourism interests.

The project helped to customise the local partner's lorry for waste collection purposes, set up bins and collection points around Fort Dauphin and build an incinerator at the local hospital to dispose of clinical waste.

After a three-month phase including preparation and implementation there was a noticeable improvement in the town's cleanliness, the collection of waste and the capacity of the local partner and his team to manage and plan the future development: the project has become a self-financing enterprise for the local partner, Tiana Rakotobe.

The Andrew Lees Trust has since built a second incinerator for the hospital specifically for cholera waste and is providing additional supports following requests from the hospital staff.
