Malagasy Spirits

Our first benefit in June 1996, showcased the excellent Justin Vali Trio, and the stunning southern group Njava, at Dingwalls in Camden. It was a complete sell-out, with more than 400 people attending.

Hanitra Rasoanaivo, who leads the group Tarika, also told us about their exciting new project to revive the ancient tradition of the Valiha, which is in danger of being forgotten. Hanitra explained that 'Valiha High' teaches young children Nogabe and Huguesin Tana the skills of Valiha playing and buys instruments for those who cannot afford to buy their own (see the bottom of this page for how you can help).

In 1997 we were delighted to present the UK debut of the extraordinary Malagasy guitarist D'Gary to play at the benefit.

In 1998 Hanitra Rasoanaivo provided an energetic workshop of traditional Malagasy dance, whilst Zalama played some beautiful acoustic guitar and the evening ended with the exciting new sounds of Nogabe Randriaharimalala's Big Dance Band.

Malagasy Musicians
For the fourth year running Madagascar Spirits 4 presented some of the leading sounds from their latest world music chart topping album, 'D'. This event launched the Projet Radio video. You can obtain a Projet Radio video - for more information see the contact page.

Charles de Ledesma has regularly presented his world music disco and audiences always enjoy the Malagasy disco compiled by Ian Anderson.

Thanks to all the people who turned up to the benefits and particularly to all the people at FOE who generously gave their time to help. Also thanks to Vola Parker and her friends from Vanilla who provide the excellent Malagasy catering at these events.

Thanks also to our sponsors for Madagascar Spirits 3, 4 and 5 - Earth Love Fund - who have supported our events as part of their Artists for the Environment Festivals 98 and 99..

Madagascar Spirits 5

Art from Madagascar

In June 2000, Madagascar Spirits 5 launched the Energy Project's special promotional and training video, accompanied by an exhibition of paintings and drawings of Madagascar from Chris Robinson. The event took place at The Museum Of on the South Bank, London, and drew a crowd of approximately 120 visitors.

The video was presented twice during the evening and many paintings of Madagascar were sold. The event was sponsored by Earth Love Fund as part of 'Artists for The Environment Festival 2000'.
