About the Trust

The Andrew Lees Trust was set up in January 1995, in the memory of Andrew Lees, then Campaigns Director of Friends of the Earth.

In Christmas, 1994, Andrew went to Fort Dauphin, Southern Madagascar to make a film about a proposed titanium mine which threatened to wreck two thirds of the country's last remaining littoral forests, affecting the survival of many unique plant and animal species. Equally serious was the threat to the homes, habitats and livelihoods of thousands of villagers living there.

Tragically, Andrew died of heat stroke on the last day of his visit whilst trying to get some additional footage of the imperilled Petriky forest.

When it was discovered that Andrew had died, the money was sent to Madagascar to launch the Centre Ecologique Libanona (CEL).

CEL was set up as a training and resource centre for local Malagasy, to provide opportunities for further education and develop the capacity of local people to find solutions for social and environmental development in the region. It was inaugurated in December 1995 and dedicated to the memory of Andrew Lees. Libanona Ecology Centre, Fort Dauphin

ALT now implements a range of environmental and social education projects across the south but continues to support the CEL by providing annual student bursaries : the Andrew Lees Bursary and the Marek Mayer Bursary
